Kirkby Stephen in the Eden Valley is developing a reputation for great arts event and this winter they are bringing award-winning performers to the town.

Kate Lynch, Chair of Kirkby Stephen Community Arts says: “We’ve got some really stunning events coming up before Christmas … first up we have Sonia Sabri Dance Company with their wonderful Same, Same… but Different, a beautiful dance performance for ages 5+ and their families. With dance, live music and storytelling this is a wonderful introduction to dance from this award-winning company. Join us at Kirkby Stephen Sports & Social Club on Saturday 9 November at 3pm. Remote Cinema in Kirkby Stephen
Remote Cinema in Kirkby Stephen will be screening Ken Loach’s new film Sorry We Missed You on Friday 15 November. Filmed in and around Newcastle, this new film focuses on the world of zero-hours contracts and their devastating impact on a local family. Loach has again teamed up with Paul Laverty, who together brought us the critically acclaimed I, Daniel Blake. Doors open at 7pm, tickets just £5.
Cabaret night with Shoo Shoo Baby
Kate adds: “And we start the festive period with the magnificent Shoo Shoo Baby’s Christmas Cabaret on Friday 13 December. With stunning vocals, hilarious songwriting and extraordinary costumes, Shoo Shoo Baby will certainly get you into the Christmas spirit. So pull on your best Christmas jumper, get yourself a large sherry and settle down to the most shamelessly sparkly cabaret in town! Tickets just £10.”
New dance show for ages 5-plus and their adults

Kirkby Stephen Community Arts also invites its younger audiences to a family show that mixes Kathak, contemporary and Hip Hop dance, with hints of live music and physical storytelling, to create a playful and colourful world that explores our curiosities and fears, the times we feel different and when we belong.
Kate explains; “Inspired by the well-known Anglo-Asian phrase ‘same, same…but different’, meaning “Yes, something kind of similar, but not the exact same thing”, three dancer-musicians conjure a magical atmosphere that celebrates our individuality, diversity and the bonds which connect us all.

‘”Same Same…But Different’ has been made in collaboration with a number of primary schools in Birmingham and London and the children’s creative ideas and experiences of being different and belonging, have been brought into the show.”
Birmingham based, award-winning Sonia Sabri Company is one of the UK’s leading dance and music companies renowned for dazzling, lively performances created by Directors Sonia and Sarvar Sabri. Their work is inspired by Indian and British culture and they have an international reputation for presenting Kathak in a contemporary context.
By working with Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, and its network of village halls, Sonia Sabri Company is able to reach new audiences for their work.
Kate adds: “We are so looking forward to bringing the amazing Sonia Sabri Company to Kirkby Stephen with Same, Same… But Different. What a fantastic opportunity for young people in Cumbria to see award-winning professional dance on their doorstep.’”
