To mark the Tour of Britain coming through Kirkby Stephen and the Eden Valley on Tuesday 10 September, Kirkby Stephen Community Arts presents SPOKE – A Celebration of Cycling for 3 days of FREE arts activities says Conrad Lynch, TEAM Arts Consultant.
The celebration of Cycling will take place between 8-10 September 2019.
The highlight of the celebration is CHEER! a short dance piece commissioned by Kirkby Stephen Community Arts (KSCA) for SPOKE, created by Sian Williams from THE KOSH.
Sian has worked most recently on Theatre by the Lake’s hit productions of Handbagged, As You Like It, The Secret Garden and Beauty & The Beast. CHEER! will be performed by James Aiden Kay and members of the community will premiere on Tuesday 10 September at 1pmin the Market Square just before the Tour of Britain zooms through town.

About the Tour of Britain Stage 4 – Gateshead to Kendal
The approximate timing for Kirkby Stephen and the surrounding areas are:-
- Brough – 1:18pm to 1:46pm
- Great Musgrave – 1:23pm to 1:52pm
- Kirkby Stephen – 1:30pm to 2:01pm
- Sedbergh Junction – 1:35pm to 2:06pm

The tour will pass through Kirkby Stephen town centre between 1.30pm and 2pm, with a Sprint section outside Kirkby Stephen Sports and Social Club.
There will be no parking on the route and there will be rolling road closures in place. We advise you to use the main Car Park at Christian Head.
There will also be the opportunity to view the tour as it passes from the A685 onto the A683 (towards Sedbergh) with free parking at Stay Lambing Live, and the chance to grab a quick cuppa from Saddlebacks Coffee who again will be providing some free beverages (tokens will be available from the SPOKE Volunteer at the Sedbergh Junction), and look at some of our artwork.

Tuesday 10 September 10am-12pm & 2pm-5pm – Have a go on an E-Bike at Hartley Fold, Hartley After watching the professionals go past pop in to Eden-e-motion (Winners of the SME Northern enterprise Awards “Best E-Bike retail shop, Cumbria Award 2019) who will be opening their shop in Hartley to answer questions about and allow people to try electric bikes before and after the race passes through. If you’re looking for the speed and hill climbs without the same amount of effort as the professional cyclists, try an eBike!
SUNSET OUTDOOR CINEMA Tuesday 10 September 7.30pm (doors 7pm) – Join us for Sunset Cinema at Pennine View Park with a screening of cycling themed entertainment, plus bottle bar and movie snacks, presented in partnership with Eden Arts. Just come along with your picnic blanket or low back seating.
We will have a performance from Kirkby Stephen Silver Band at 7:30pm, followed by a Solo Reprise of CHEER! From The Kosh with the main feature starting at 8pm
BMX BANDITS (PG / 1.5hr)
Come and watch the freewheeling film debut of Nicole Kidman in this 1983 cult classic BMX BANDITS. Teens P.J.and Goose get their thrills on BMX bikes, performing hair-raising tricks all across Sydney, Along with their new friend Judy (Nicole Kidman), they discover a box of walkie-talkies to be used in a bank robbery. When the young trio snatches the devices, it propels them on a hair-raising adventure in which their pedalling skills might just save their necks.

SUNDAY 8 SEPTEMBER – FAMILY DAY on Church Green, Market Square & KSSSC 10am to 4pm
Come and try a range of activities including arts and crafts, poetry, movement, food and drink, a session with Stomping Ground, cycling advice from Coast to Coast Cycles and a bike-powered smoothie maker.
Throughout the day you will able to make a smoothie or colour in a flag or jersey that will be used to decorate the tour route – just pop into the marquee on Church Green and get creative.
Bicycle Advice at Coast to Coast Cycles – pop in for free advice and a cycling chat with Simon from 10am-12pm above the Visitor Centre
Print Making with Jamie Barnes – come and have a go at making your own print with this Kendal based artist – 10am-12pm & 1-2pm on Church Green
Poetry Pebble with Katie Hales – help create a poem that Katie will perform for the Tour on Tuesday and make some Poetry Pebbles that will be displayed in the Westmorland Dales – 12-1pm & 2pm-3pm on Church Green.
Makers Mills Cycling Pom Poms and Knitting – Join Sophie from Makers Mill, Keswick to make a Pom Pom for your bike and have a go at some knitting – 11-12pm and 2pm-4pm on Church Green
Stomping Ground – come and join Lily Horseman to enjoy some nature inspired outdoor play on Church Green – 1pm to 4pm
CHEER! Movement & theatre sessions with dancer James Aiden Kay and director Bobby Brook- come and join in at Kirkby Stephen Sports & Social Club – 10am-11am & 1pm-2pm & 2 to 3pm
Be part of CHEER! a community dance event for anyone from 6 to over the over 60’s!, created by the award winning performance company THE KOSH with workshops on Sunday and the chance to be part of the Tour coming through town on Tuesday (not compulsory!)
On Market Square we will be offering free coffee, tea and hot chocolate from Saddlebacks Coffee Bar from 10am-2pm and free ice-cream from Brough Ice Cream Farm from 2-4pm – this is a limited offer on a first come, first served basis – when it’s gone it’s gone! – simply pick up a token from the information point in The Cloisters.
Monday 9 September at 9:45am Telling Tales – on bikes! Join us for a pre-school story time and flag-making at Kirkby Stephen Sports & Social Club.
BICYCLE BOY – A bicycle powered musical, for children aged 6‐10 and their families – Monday 9 September at 4pm & 6pm – Pennine View Park, Station Road, Kirkby Stephen, just come along with your picnic blanket or low back seating (doors open 30 mins before the performance).
Sam has 24 hours to clear out his grandad’s old bike workshop. He remembers grandad teaching him to ride (and pretending to be his favourite superhero, Bicycle Boy). It seems grandad may have left Sam a present somewhere in the workshop, and some clues to find it. But there’s no power and Sam needs electricity to unlock the clues. Can you help him? If we can connect up enough bikes and pedal like mad we can make generate enough power for Sam’s journey (and the show). Join us for a musical adventure (and be prepared to help pedal power the performance!).
