The future of horticulture in Cumbria is secured as school children were at the forefront of this years Cumbria in Bloom, writes Katie May Chesworth.
More than 30 awards were presented to town and village groups concerned to improve their local environment, in the presence of the Deputy Lieutenant for Cumbria, the High Sheriff, Mayor of Carlisle, Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Patrons of Cumbria in Bloom and other dignitaries.
The High Sheriff to Cumbria, Marcia Reid-Fotheringham praised the community spirit and thanked everyone for their support. Mayor of Carlisle Cllr Marilyn Bowman, who hosted this years awards, said it was welcoming to go to villages and towns and see beautiful displays.

For two of this years town and village entrants there was an added incentive – the possibility of being nominated for next year’s Britain in Bloom finals.
Stanwix Urban Community and Penrith Large Town will be Cumbria’s representatives. The national results are announced on 25 October.
