Historic South Lakes House Pays Homage to Craftsmanship

A historic house and gardens, home to the oldest example of patchwork in England, is celebrating crafts-based skills in the run-up to Christmas 2025, to help keep the tradition of arts and crafts alive.

Levens Hall and Gardens is the proud owner of patchwork bed hangings and a quilt, which both date from around 1708.  This patchwork was inspired by Dorothy Grahme, wife of owner Colonel James Grahme and a former Maid of Honour to Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II.

Swap Screen Time for Serene Time This Bank Holiday

Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show is encouraging families to swap screen time for ‘serene time’, as it prepares to open the gates for its annual event on Sunday August 24. The traditional elements of fell racing, hound racing and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling will all be in evidence, as the cornerstones of an event older than the modern Olympics. This year, however, there will be a brand new attraction. The event will also encompass the first ever paragliding race, the thrilling Grasmere Hike and Fly, which is parachuting into the programme.
