Cumbria in Bloom’s current and future judges gathered in Keswick for their training day, ahead of the 2022 competition.
Keswick offered a wide range of interesting and diverse areas for the judges.
RHS national judge Rae Beckwith joined the group of 20 Cumbrian judges, to give advice on how to judge entries.
In conjunction with Jean Airey, Liz Auld had devised a route for the judges to walk around, having gathered at the Rawnsley Centre on Thursday (April 28),
The areas of Keswick visited included:
- Tithebarn Street Corner – Keswick in Bloom Volunteers
- Derwent Close – Community Residents
- Hope Park Sundial Garden- Keswick Parks Manager
- Lake Road Underpass – Keswick in Bloom Volunteers
- Sensory Garden – Friends of Keswick Parks.
The day was planned as a training exercise for current and future Cumbria in Bloom judges.
Liz Auld said: “The judges were greatly assisted in their deliberations by Christine Fawcett, Keswick Parks Manager, and Catherine Parker from Keswick Town Council, both of whom met us in Hope Park and led us round the remainder of the tour.
“Although it was very early in the season, the judges thought that Keswick looked magnificent and, despite the heavy footfall from visitors, remarkable free of litter and graffiti.”
The judges paid tribute to the work of the many volunteers who give of their time to keep the flower beds looking pristine throughout the year.
On returning to the Rawnsley Centre, Rae Beckwith offered lots of help and tips when assessing areas like these.
Cumbria in Bloom offers awards in the following categories – Pride in Your Community (Towns and Villages), Tourism, Schools and assessments in the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme.
