In the Studio the event opens with Bookcase Day – featuring talks about five recent titles of local interest.
The day is sponsored by the Bookcase, the largest secondhand and antiquarian bookshop in the centre of Carlisle.
Topics include: Cumbia – Story of the Landscape with David Wilcock, Penrith in the 20th Century with Prof. Michael Mullett and Tale Pieces – Thomas Bewick and Life in 18th Century Northumbria with Stephen Matthews.
David looks at the way geology, nature and man have shaped the Lake District landscape as we know it today.
Prof. Mullett has published a six volume history of the market town in the Eden Valley, Penrith. He will be looking at the factors which have shaped this town, as we know it today.
Stephen Matthew of Bookcase and Bookends bookshops talks about the Northumbrian artist, Thomas Bewick, who reinvented the art of wood engraving.
Later in the day, Prof. Peter Roebuck will be talking about Cattle Droving – Scotland and Ireland through Cumbria to the South, and in the evening Pele Towers of the Eden Valley with David Crackanthorpe and Simon Ledingham.
Prof. Roebuck describes how up to 200,000 cattle crossed the Scottish/English border each year and explains how droving was an important part of the economy for the region we now know as Cumbria.
The final event for Bookcase Day features the pele towers we can see at Dalston, Catterlen, Blencow, Hutton John, Dacre, Yanwath, Askham, Isel, Clifton, Newbiggin, Howgill and Wharton. As well as family homes, they were also the centre of their community.
