Legal update with Baines Wilson – new rates and limits coming into force for employer

Baines Wilson LLP’s Employment team aim to provide employers with the legal support they need. And in these legal updates, provide the latest information on employment law. This week they provide the details of the changes to statutory payments for employers.

Their approach is practical rather than legalistic, with an emphasis on producing the right solutions for a wide range of employment law problems. Their clients range from large plcs to small family owned companies.

The following statutory payments will be raised from 6 April 2019:

• The limit on the compensatory award for ordinary unfair dismissal will increase from £83,682 to £86,444
• The maximum amount of a week’s pay for the purposes of calculating statutory redundancy payments and the basic award in unfair dismissal claims will increase from £508 to £525
• Statutory redundancy payment will increase from a maximum of £15,240 to £15,750
• SSP rate per week will increase from £92.05 to £94.25
• SMP/SAP rate per week will increase from £145.18 to £148.68 with the maximum period remaining at 33 weeks
• SPP rate per week will increase from £145.18 to £148.68 with the maximum period of two weeks ordinary paternity pay

National Minimum Wage rates have increased from 1 April as follows (per hour):

National Living Wage (age 25 +) will increase from £7.83 to £8.21
Standard Adult Rate (age 21 +) will increase from £7.38 to £7.70
Development Rate (ages 18 – 20) will increase from £5.90 to £6.15
Young Workers Rate (ages 16-17) will increase from £4.20 to £4.35
Apprentice Rate will increase from £3.70 to £3.90
