IT’S full steam ahead for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, as the iconic attraction is set to welcome back passengers from next Thursday 30 July 2020 – complete with a new first-class observation carriage boasting panoramic views of the Cumbrian coast and the dramatic mountain scenery of the Lake District World Heritage Site.
During lockdown, a team of experts have been lovingly keeping one of the UK’s best-known heritage railway lines and its historic steam engines in tip top condition. Now a series of new innovations are ready for passengers to enjoy, including a luxury observation carriage which is available for up to 14 passengers to hire privately.
Resplendent in a livery of red with padded bench seating and more head room, the carriage offers increased space and comfort for passengers – perfect for a socially distanced get together.
Private compartments for up to 2, 4 or 6 people are also available in a selection of open, semi-open and indoor carriages, with passengers choosing their preferred time and type of carriage when they book.
Although request stops aren’t currently available, an online itinerary planner will help passengers
explore the two station stops at the World Heritage Site’s only coastal village in Ravenglass and Dalegarth in the spectacular Eskdale Valley. That includes theRavenglass Railway Museum, which is reopening its doors with a few small changes now in place, including a new one-way system.
To help people make the most of the revamped timetable, picnic boxes can now be pre-ordered for ‘Railway Picnics’ and there will be two ‘Eskdale Belle Experiences’ every day from 1 August including a takeaway hot drink and shortbread to enjoy en-route, as well as a hamper to take home.
Head of Marketing & Development at Lake District Estates, Rachel Bell says, We’re excited to welcome visitors once again, especially with the new observation carriage experience. As you would expect, there are a few new ‘Ratty rules’ to help us manage capacity and ensure the safety of all visitors and staff. We’ve also strengthened our health and safety regimes in line with government guidelines, but we’re feeling positive about the future and think our new-look timetable will give people the feeling of freedom they’ve been missing as they enjoy their summer staycations in the Lake District.”
Looking ahead, there are also plans in the pipeline to extend the autumn season and team up with Muncaster Castle and Gardens to create extended family days out – with details set to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Passengers jumping on board Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway from 30 July must purchase a dated and timed ticket before 9am on the day of travel. Face coverings must be worn and the attraction has achieved its official ‘We’re Good to Go’ accreditation to show it is following all the official Government safety measures and public health guidance.
