Lightning-fast broadband will soon be available in Caldbeck thanks to the Government’s Project Gigabit rollout to rural areas, with work due to be carried out by Fibrus.
Caldbeck is the latest village that will benefit from Full Fibre in Cumbria, and Fibrus teams and contractors will be in the area carrying out work to make this high-speed connectivity possible. Fibrus has pledged to keep any inconvenience to residents and businesses to a minimum.
The build forms part of Fibrus’ work to connect tens of thousands of people living and working in rural Cumbria to high-speed connectivity as part of a £108 million government contract. Project Gigabit is the government’s mission to bring lightning-fast, reliable broadband to hard-to-reach communities across the UK, and the build in Caldbeck will help pave the way for connections in the area as part of this project.
Commenting on the work being undertaken in Caldbeck, Chris Collins, Head of Network Build at Fibrus, said: “At Fibrus, we use a full-fibre optic cable all the way to the premises creating a quality and reliability that cannot be achieved any other way. This will make a big difference to local businesses and families in Caldbeck, allowing them to access more reliable broadband rather than having to rely on slow copper wires for their internet.
“Once the work is complete, people will be able to take advantage of Fibrus’ Full Fibre Broadband, with speeds of up to 1Gb.”
The Government’s minister for data and digital Julia Lopez said: “Residents and visitors to Caldbeck will soon be able to tap into lightning-fast broadband, thanks to the £108 million we’re investing to upgrade rural homes and businesses across Cumbria.
“The government’s Project Gigabit is the biggest broadband rollout in British history, delivering fast, reliable internet in underserved locations. We are rolling these networks out faster than any other country in Europe, and it means patchy broadband in remote villages and towns will soon be a thing of the past, opening up a world of possibilities to improve lives and drive growth.”

As well as investing in broadband, Fibrus have also been investing in local communities. The Fibrus Community Fund, has seen the company invest £60,000 over the last 12 months to tackle digital poverty across Cumbria, including supporting Friends of St Cuthbert’s School Wigton, Carlisle Youth Zone and Carlisle Radio FM Limited (CRFM). This investment sits alongside Fibrus’ Play it Forward fund, which has been providing grants to nearly 20 Cumbrian grassroots sports clubs including Wigton Hockey Club and Wigton Rugby Club. It also sponsors the Fibrus 100, the first Cumbrian cricket league for girls.
