Carlisle computer shop rewards residents for recycling old tech and helps to set up new kit in January

With reports estimating electronic waste as the fastest-growing of its type globally, one Carlisle business is taking action: incentivising locals to declutter their tech and reduce their environmental impact.

Cache4 IT Solutions is running two schemes in January to benefit both the environment and the local community. The family-ran computer shop is rewarding people for recycling their old items this month. In addition, there will also be free advice for residents on setting up their new tech.

“The weeks after Christmas and the January sales are often the time when people’s drawers get full of old devices that no longer get used. Much of that will end up in landfill, leaking harmful chemicals. We’re running a recycle your tech month in January to help people declutter and do their bit for the environment,” says Paul Crooks, Managing Director of Cache4 IT Solutions.

Residents can drop off devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops and PC accessories at Cache4 throughout this month. Regardless of condition, they will be responsibly recycled.

A £5 store voucher incentive for each participant, Paul adds, is “a little thank you for making a greener choice.”

With many people getting new tech over Christmas and in the sales, January is the perfect time to declutter, rather than letting old gadgets gather dust. At the same time, new devices often come with a learning curve.

“Tech can be overwhelming, especially for those not as familiar with it,” continues Paul. “We want to take away the stress and help people get the most out of their Christmas gifts too, whether it’s a smartphone, tablet or laptop.”

Cache4 is also offering free tech drop-in sessions every Saturday in January. Residents can visit the shop to receive one-to-one support for setting up or learning how to use their devices. All gadgets are welcome, and the sessions aim to help everyone feel more confident with their tech.

The two initiatives reflect Cache4’s values, Paul explains. “We’re proud to kick off 2025 with initiatives that support our community and the environment. It’s what we’re all about as a small family business.”

The Cache4 shop is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm, and 9am to 2pm on Saturday in Lowry Hill, Carlisle. No appointment is necessary for the January recycling or tech set-up schemes. For more information, visit www.cache4.co.uk.
