A sizzling Bank Holiday weekend is in store for families at Muncaster Castle as battle commences to win the “Top Sausage” title at the historic venue’s famous Sausage Festival.
Sausage makers from across the land will converge on the west Cumbrian castle for the family-friendly battle of the bangers this weekend.
As part of their ticket, festival-goers receive 6 sausage samples during a daily sausage tasting session. Then, they vote for Muncaster’s favourite sausage! Along with bangers there’ll also be bouncy castles, inflatables and other activities for youngsters courtesy of BEE UNIQUE.
It’s the first Muncaster Sausage Festival for five years – re-introduced to celebrate the return of the famous old County (and sausage) name – Cumberland. The area’s new local government unitary authority is Cumberland Council.
“What better time to celebrate all things sausage than now when the historic county name of Cumberland is back in use!” says Ewan Frost-Pennington, a member of the family who’ve lived at Muncaster Castle for over 800 years.
On each day of the Bank Holiday Weekend there will be a “Best Sausage of the Day” competition decided by visitors who’ll taste the various bangers made by competing sausage makers.
Then, on Bank Holiday Monday, the overall “Champion Sausage Maker of the Year” will be announced.
“There’s a whole host of activities for children, decorations, music and entertainment all focused on the world of sausages. We can’t wait to welcome visitors along for a wonderful weekend!” says Ewan.
It will be fun, theatrical, musical and there will be something for everyone – while still allowing time for visitors to enjoy all the other attractions of Muncaster Castle including the famous bird of prey flying displays.

“We’ll even have a Sausage Shaped dog competition!” says Ewan. “We want visitors to bring along their dogs – fancy dress is allowed – and there’ll be prizes for the winning pooch. The ‘Bangers and Dash time trial’ will also be something quirky to give a go!”
