Over a decade ago my daughter pleaded to go to a maize maze, and this week I eventually went with her for a morning of fun. Ok, she’s 23 years old now, however that didn’t stop us having a great time getting lost and then finding our way out of the towering maze of maize.

I did wish we had come all those years ago, as there were so many activities at the working farm for children to enjoy.
With families getting to the half-way point of the long summer holidays and the weather being as unpredictable as usual, Lakeland Maze Farm Park could be your answer to “I’m bored”, “What can we do today?” and “Do you have to spend all day on that computer/game/phone?”
I was so surprised just how much there is to do for all ages, both inside and out. With two large soft play areas, peddle cars and go-karts, pet zone, farm animal zone, youngsters climbing-wall, indoor picnic areas and cafe all undercover you can spend the whole day here without spending more than the entrance fee – even on the wettest day.
There are fun talks and demonstrations with the animals, and a tractor ride running regularly throughout the day.
Outside there’s a great outdoor adventure playground, alternative wooden maze, to enjoy plus horses, ponies, alpacas and more animals to see. This is without mentioning the namesake of the farm park – the maize maze.
There are two maize mazes to explore – the mini and the main – the little and the big. Each has bridges you can work your way towards and take a bird-eye view of the whole maize field.
Each party is given a red flag and telephone number to use in case of medical emergencies, (so you can be found easily by the friendly staff) and then you set off into the jungle of maize over 8ft high. Within the maze, you will find stamps to collect, and even picnic benches to enjoy a rest. The maize is so dense you can’t see through it, however, you can hear the laughter of children and adults getting lost and found.
The great thing about this activity is it is completely sustainable – the crop is harvested at the end of the season and a new, completely different design maze is created the following year.
We visited in the middle of school holidays, with lots of families enjoying a day out, yet the large space the farm park covers means you don’t feel how busy the park is. There really is a sense of space – acres of fun.
With the recent rain, it is advisable to take your wellies for the outdoor maze, however there are fun Wellie Washing zones around the place and hand washing stations for you to use.
As we were leaving we spotted a sign for a Moonlit Maze – what an adventure that would be, whatever your age, available on Saturday 21 and 28 September from 6 pm – 10 pm – a great evening’s entertainment for adults to enjoy.
Thank you to Lakeland Maze Farm Park for inviting us to explore this wonderful family attraction near Kendal.
