We are so fortunate to have people who will risk their own lives to save others on the hills, fells, lakes and towns when a crisis hits – the Mountain Rescue Teams.

Today, we received these images of a rescue carried out by Cockermouth MRT attending their 40th call out this year.
They came to the assistance of a 70-year old female walker who had fallen near the summit of Scarth Gap on Tuesday, at 4.40pm. The Team was requested to assist the North West Ambulance Service with the treatment and evacuation of the walker who had sustained serious head injuries.
The full team were called out and ascended from Gatesgarth Farm, Buttermere. The Helimed 58 of the Great North Air Ambulance had already landed nearby and their paramedic and HEMS doctor were on the scene.
Given the location and severity of the casualties injuries, the Team Leader requested a Coastguard Helicopter with winching capability. R199 from Prestwick was tasked to the incident and was on scene within 45 minutes. The casualty was then loaded into the helicopter and transferred to Carlisle Infirmary for further treatment.
All 24 Team members attended the callout which lasted 3.5 hours.
Team Leader Andrew McNeil thanked both the crews of GNAAS Helimed 58 and the Coastguard R199 for their assistance.
It is not just on the fells these volunteers are on call to help 24/7. In the floods of December 2015, train and road accidents, and when people have gone missing in towns and rural areas, the Mountain Rescue Teams are there to help.
