Whilst watching the news I often feel sorry for the satirist – how can you make anything more absurd than the actions that are reported each day?
John Crace is the parliamentary sketch writer for The Guardian, and previously also wrote the paper’s “Digested Read” column.
A football fan (Tottenham Hotspur F.C. his team of choice) he has written a number of books about the club as well as a blog ESPN FC.
His latest book is A Farewell to Calm – The New Normal Survival Guide. No guesses are needed to know what this is going to be about!
He is open about his opinion of Boris Johnston. He Tweeted how satire becomes reality after writing a joke in a sketch about Boris Johnson hosting a baby shower for Carrie Symonds at Chequers just two days before announcing “now is the time for everyone to stop non-essential contact with others”.
I saw John at the WBTB2019 – the last festival, just days before the Lockdown 0.1. He was talking about Teresa May and his book Who’s afraid of the Maybot? How could anyone have imagined where we would be the next time he took to the stage?
John’s knowledge and insight into our political world are only matched by his wit and ability to make the difficult times we are living through have a little bit of humour.
I look forward to seeing his performance ‘Bluster and Bedlam’ at 7.30 pm – we all need a bit of a laugh, but without forgetting where we are.
