THE wonderful thing about Cumbria is that it has something amazing to offer all year round – and as we slip into autumn, we have plenty of exciting things to explore both inside and out.
1. Visit one of the world’s leading Roman museums on the coast of Cumbria – Senhouse Museum.
Britain’s oldest private collection of Roman treasures – sited on the West Cumbrian coast – has reopened its doors to the public for the first time in five months (Friday 14 August 2020).
A series of planned celebrations and events to mark the Senhouse Roman Museum’s 30th anniversary came to an abrupt halt when lockdown began in March. Now the small staff team – and network of loyal volunteers – are set to welcome people back to rediscover the little-known stories of life for ordinary people in Cumbria during the Roman occupation almost 2000 years ago.

2. Get on your bike and take a selfie
That’s precisely what Kendal cyclist Anne Thompson did, and she’s now a finalist in the National Cycle Selfie competition – and could win £250 worth of Amazon vouchers. And you’ve got until Friday, 18 September to get your entry in the contest run by insurers Urban Jungle.

3. Challenge your little grey cells with the Lakeland Maize Maze
Despite lockdown, Lakeland Maze Farm Park still planted their annual maze made from maize, which means you can now test your navigation skills around a new maze this year.
The family attraction in Kendal is a brilliant day out for all the family – and there’s much more than the maze to explore as we discovered last summer when Cumbria24 had a day out there (check out our adventures here)

4. Discover Cumbria’s heritage with your dog
The champion of Cumbrian cultural heritage, Cumbria’s Living Heritage (www.cumbriaslivingheritage.co.uk), is reminding pooches that they can have a brilliant cultural-focused doggy distancing day out if they head to a county with two World Heritage Sites and fascinating places in-between. They could even become a Hound of the Week!
Going all out on dog-friendliness is Holker Hall and Gardens where to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the hall and gardens being open to the public. Dogs are now welcome in the gardens if walked on a lead, as well as in the parkland, courtyard and café where lead-led tails have long wagged at the sight of fallow deer, East Indian black ducks and the Cavendish family’s chickens.

5. Visit the best collection of ceramic art at PotFest-in-the-Park 2020
POTFEST in the Park takes place in Hutton-in-the-Forest on 4, 5 & 6 September, after being delayed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Cumbria24 have covered the annual event regularly, and we are delighted the pandemic hasn’t prevented this fantastic festival of ceramics from going ahead this year – even if it is a little later in Cumbria’s social calendar.
Usually scheduled for the last weekend of July, those who thought their annual pottery pilgrimage was just another victim of 2020 can rest assured their beloved show is good to go.
With the stunning backdrop of Hutton-in-the-Forest, Potfest in the Park has an international reputation, attracting thousands of visitors every summer.
