Where did the summer go? There have been so many things to do, places to see and events to watch the season has flown by and now we look forward to the colours of Autumn.
However, despite the kids going back to school this week, there are plenty of activities planned in Cumbria for September, including outdoor events such as the final agricultural event of the season, The Westmorland Show.
Here is just a taste of what you can enjoy this month in Cumbria.
Taste the delights of the new Cumbrian Food & Drink Show – Saturday & Sunday 14-15 September 10am-4pm
Who doesn’t love a good food event – especially in Cumbria where we have some of the finest
The Rheged Food & Drink Show 2019 is a new event which celebrates the finest producers in Cumbria and the North – promoting themes of local, sustainable, high quality, innovative and authentic food and drinks. We recently published a post about the new event.
On Saturday evening, restaurant critic, food writer, broadcaster and MasterChef judge Jay Rayner will be giving a special audience with a performance entitled ‘My Last Supper with Jay Rayner’. This is the question he is most asked by audiences, and so he decided to investigate the idea and turn it into this unique performance – or has he puts it, “A show to die for!”

Explorer a maze by moonlight – 21 & 28 September
We were invited to explore the Maise Maze near Kendal this summer, and we are intrigued by the new Moonlite adventures to be had this month at the Lakeland Farm Park.
The maze can be explored by day, at weekends (including Fridays) right up to September 29 –
check out our adventure here. But, the maze is also a ‘planet’ to explore by night, during moonlit maze experiences on September 21 and 28.
These will be true adrenaline-filled events, given the moon-landing theme this year. Working your way around a spaceship and spaceman takes on a whole new dimension when you only have the moon and a torch to assist your navigation. Will the moonwalkers return to earth?

Catch the Tour of Britain as it speeds through Cumbria – Tuesday 10 September
Cycling has never been so popular, both as a spectator sport and an activity to enjoy. Cumbria is a popular destination for cyclists with the mountain roads and scenic views – it’s no easy landscape to push your bike up, however, it is these challenges which draw the enthusiasts and this month the professional champions.
The Tour of Britain’s stage 4 goes across the county. This 173.2km stage starts at Gateshead in the North East to Kendal in South Lakeland.
Riders will cross the Pennines and head through the Yorkshire Dales National Park during a stage containing almost 3,000 metres of climbing. The stage finish will be on the 500-metre, 11% average climb of Beast Banks in the South Lakeland town of Kendal, which hosts a finish of the race for
According to Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, the race is set to attract £11 million to the local economy – check our post on sister blog eBusinessCumbria.
Eden Tourism has produced a special webpage showing the estimated timings for the race going through their district with crowds due to gather at Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Sedburgh and Kendal.

I’m so looking forward to the annual Borderlines Carlisle Book Festival which returns to the city this month – and great to see Alexander McCall Smith returning to give a talk as part of the event. I’ve got my tickets all ready to see my literary hero.
A good friend is so pleased to have bagged tickets to see The Yorkshire Shepherdess – they are like gold dust!
This event is growing each year and has a great balance between international authors and local writers pitched perfectly. I’ve attended workshops as well as talks in the past and come away with some invaluable new skills and knowledge.

Take to the dance floor with a Ceilidh – 20 September
A special fundraising Ceilidh dancing is taking place this month to help raise £250,000 to reopen a home for elderly people closed following the Cumbrian floods of 5 December 2015.
