Victory for Coniston’s Bluebird car and coach park proposal

Bluebird Coach & Car Park

A new car park to help cater for visitors heading to Coniston to see Donald Campbell’s historic Bluebird craft has been given the go-ahead.

It will be on land in the centre of the village to the rear of the Ruskin Museum which has a purpose-built wing which houses the iconic hydroplane Bluebird K7.

The new car park will have spaces for 70 cars and six coaches along with five accessible parking spaces and five electric vehicle charging points. There will also be a building to facilitate e-bike hire, toilets and local information.

The proposal was unanimously approved today at a meeting of the Lake District National Park Authority’s Development Control Committee.

The application for the development, on Lands Field off Yewdale Road, was made by Phil Johnston, owner of holiday accommodation company The Coppermines Lakes Cottages.

Mr Johnston said: “We are very pleased to announce that after working very closely with the Lake District National Park officers, their member’s today have voted to allow the creation of a new car and coach park.

“The new facility will be available for 70 cars, 6 coaches and will promote sustainable onward transport by walking, cycling, bus and boat alternatives. There will be EV charging both for cars and e-bikes, public toilets and an information point with details of all local walks and cycle routes.

“We are also hoping to include facilities for those with additional accessibility needs such as Trampers so that everyone is able to enjoy this beautiful part of the Lakes.”

The arrival of Bluebird at the Ruskin Museum has seen a big increase in visitors and an associated need for parking. It’s hoped the new development will decrease illegal parking in the village.
The application was passed with a number of conditions including there be no overnight occupation of vehicles in the car park.

It’s hoped the car and coach park will be in operation by early 2025.
