Granny Dowbekin’s, Pooley Bridge
Anyone who follows our Instagram account LakesAndMore, or that of our ‘Blog Dog’ Mr Arthur Weasley, will know this tearoom on the banks for the river at Pooley Bridge on Ullswater is a favourite of ours.
Before the devastating floods on December 5, 2015 this was a small tearoom, with a few tables in what would have been a front room of a house, and a tea garden.
Though the café wasn’t flooded, they were hit by the bridge being washed away. The family kept open, and we found an alternative way to get to the tearoom, and watch it grow over the past three years.
The redesign of the original building, and the garden room extension has turned this tiny gem into a giant jewel of a place for a dog owner and their pet.
The small, perfectly formed menu offers traditional English food made from local, quality ingredients. Their cake selection is unbelievable and their gingerbread bridges, shaped in the style of the old bridge are worth travelling for on their own.
The service is always friendly and welcoming, and there are small portions available. From breakfast to lunch to afternoon tea this is a licensed café – which also offers a doggy bag meal and dog beer.
If you are looking for a destination on a dog walk, this is the perfect place to go – animals and humans alike.
