Local bus company Stagecoach Cumbria & North Lancashire is hiring new bus drivers, across the county, including the picturesque Lake District.
The bus provider is currently recruiting for a raft of roles, including trainee to fully licensed bus drivers, across its five depots in Barrow-in-Furness, Morecambe, Carlisle, Workington and Kendal. Roles in Engineering and Maintenance are also currently available across the region.
With views from Lake Windermere to the beaches of Morecambe Bay, drivers at Stagecoach Cumbria & North Lancashire are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to picturesque routes, with a bus stop at Waterhead Pier even claiming “The Most Scenic Bus Stop in Great Britain” title.
Bus driver Mel Coulthard has been based at the Kendal depot for the last six years, following a further six years at Morecambe.
Mel said: “I have the best office view in the world, and it changes constantly – no two days are the same. There are some tricky routes up in the Lakes, but if you’re up for a challenge you’ll be rewarded with the views.
“My favourite bus stop by far is at Dungeon Ghyll. We get a 15-minute break up there, so I often get out and go for a walk and take some photos. It’s my happy place. To anyone thinking about becoming a driver in Cumbria, I’d say just give it a go!”
Alongside being a bus driver, Mel is also a mentor, training up new drivers once they pass their test. New driver Ben Thorn, aged 18, is keen to get behind the wheel and get acquainted with the views.
“The views in Cumbria are part of the reason I wanted to be a driver. I studied horticulture at college, so nature is a huge part of my life. I recently got into a bet with a friend over who could drive the biggest vehicle. So, I applied to be a bus driver, and so far, I’m winning!
“I can’t wait to finally go out on my first shift, it’ll be an amazing feeling.”
