Plant-based afternoon tea? Lake District hotel chef goes vegan-powered

Head Chef, Richard Booth at The Lakeside

The Lake District is renowned for its quintessential afternoon teas, but one Lake District hotel is launching a new twist on a great British tradition to keep up with predictions there could be 2.9 million UK vegans by the end of 2019.*

With the recent surge in popularity for plant-based menus, the Lakeside Hotel & Spa says veganism has gone mainstream. Now it is launching six new variations of its afternoon tea menu, including two new vegan-style afternoon teas to appeal to the record numbers of people opting to sidestep meat and dairy.

Head Chef Richard Booth comments, “Britain is famously a tea-drinking nation and the Lake District has an enviable reputation for traditional afternoon teas, particularly with our overseas visitors. However, as a destination we need to keep broadening what we offer.

“Vegan options are not just an afterthought; visitors’ expectations are changing and they are constantly on the look-out for culinary experiences that offer new health and environmental benefits. As a business, we certainly won’t be saying goodbye to the more traditional afternoon teas, but we do want to diversify and show residents and visitors alike that it’s not just the big city restaurants that can offer a contemporary twist on well-known foodie favourites.”

The vegan savoury option includes parsnip croquettes and onion Mexican bean burger. Meanwhile, the sweet vegan afternoon tea features coconut and chocolate mousse, lemon drizzle cake, and panna cotta passion fruit.

Lakeside Hotel & Spa’s new afternoon tea range also includes vegetarian and gluten-free options, alongside the classic afternoon tea experience. Meat-eaters won’t miss out either, with a traditional savoury option featuring a lamb slider, fish and chips, scotch egg and sausage.
