To mark 50 years on the showfield, and to honour the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Penrith Show has planted a commemorative oak tree on the field that has been their home for so long.
Mr and Mrs Helme kindly allowed Penrith Show to be held on their field for what will be 50 shows this summer. In the early days of the show, the Helme’s gave permission for trees to be planted in the centre of the field, highlighting the corners of the main ring. More recently, an oak tree was planted to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
Show Chair Fiona Kidd said “Strong roots are always a good foundation, something the show has in spades, so we thought it would be fitting to plant another tree this year – marketing 50 years on the field, the Queen’s Jubilee and a new era for the show.
“Our new Secretarial team of Andy Ryder and Pedigree Livestock Services Limited kindly donated the tree and thanks to stone supplied by Mr Wedgewood from Barton, George Allonby and his nephew David Buchannan will be building the dry-stone wall around it – as they did for the tree planted twenty years ago for the Golden Jubilee.”
The tree was officially planted by Mr Jamie Fisher who has tenanted the land for over 40 years and whose family are still heavily involved in getting the show ready each year. As the tree was lowered a poem entitled Plant a Tree by Lucy Larcom was read out.
Secretary Andy Ryder said “We’re very much looking forward to Saturday 16th July. 2022 is a great year to begin our involvement. It will be three years since Penrith Show was live, and the money raised last year with the Grand Draw means we are in a good starting position to make the show a great event for everyone.
“We’d also like to invite anyone who would like to become involved in the show’s development to contact Catherine Jones – not only do many hands make light work, but it’s a great opportunity to bring fresh ideas to the team which are always welcomed. Catherine and the team can be contacted on 01768 870523 or email secretary@penrithshow.co.uk
