Muncaster Castle in Cumbria is to be transformed back to the time of knights, kings, princesses and peasants as it hosts a spectacular medieval festival.
The nine-day Medieval Muncaster Festival (May 27 to June 4) will replicate a traditional celebration of that time – in a family-friendly way!
There’ll be spectacular play jousting on a specially constructed rolling horse. Visitors will learn how to scrap like a squire, kit up like a knight, aim like an archer and cook like a peasant!
The nine-day festival will feature medieval re-enactors in full costume and visitors will get the chance to try out the weapons, skills and crafts of the time including archery, warrior training and medieval warfare.
For the younger ones there will be a dragon trail, where children follow a trail to try and find the dragon.
“This will be a fun, colourful and visually stunning festival that gives a real flavour of medieval times,” explains Ewan Frost-Pennington from Muncaster.
“We’re thrilled to be hosting this exciting event and look forward to welcoming visitors to our medieval castle! It’s a great opportunity for families to have fun and learn something new at the same time.”
Parts of the castle grounds will be transformed into a medieval village, complete with costumed characters, authentic craftspeople and a medieval tavern with live music. Visitors are encouraged to come along in medieval fancy dress with a prize for the “champion ” of the day! They will also have the chance to witness all the usual Muncaster spectacular falconry displays.
Each day there’ll be a “storming of the castle” with youngsters assembling to take on the fortified building.
“This is an expansion of our traditional Fools Festival and the hope is Medieval Muncaster will become an annual event. There’ll be a Fool’s show, daily bird of prey displays, BEE UNIQUE activities for the children and the chance to feast like a king at the castle café or food stall Istanbul Kitchen.”
Muncaster is working with The Past Presents Ltd which creates immersive, authentic, educational experiences from Britain’s past – and The Red Wyverns historical re-enactment society to offer visitors a glimpse into the daily lives and customs of medieval England.
