CHANCELLOR Rishi Sunak has announced that the Job Support Scheme, due to commence on 1 November 2020, will be extended to provide enhanced support for businesses required to close their premises, says Joanne Holborn of Baines Wilson LLP.
The extension is anticipated to run for the 6 month duration of scheme (but also subject to review in January) and will see eligible workers receive two thirds of their salaries up to a maximum of £2,100 per month. Employers will not be required to contribute towards wages and will only be asked to cover National Insurance and pension contributions. The extension applies to any businesses required to close due to local or national coronavirus restrictions, and employees must be off work for at least 7 consecutive days.
In line with the rest of the scheme, payments to businesses will be made in arrears, via a HMRC claims service, which will be available from December.
