A BUILDING site is a dangerous place to be and also not the most attractive scene. However, one building project in Cumbria is a real tourist attraction.
The new bridge for Pooley Bridge, replacing the traditional stone arched crossing washed away in Storm Desmond in December 2015, is attracting visitors from across the country. Read more about the construction resuming after lockdown here.
Safety barriers in place also allow visitors to watch work constructing the new, single-span aluminium bridge. And while COVID-19 has put a halt to the neighbouring Granny Dowbekins providing the perfect vantage point, where you could enjoy a coffee and construction, they are using the time to carry out their own building work.
Elsewhere in Pooley Bridge, you can hardly move for tradespeople’s vans, and building material deliveries as the little village on the edge of Ullswater prepare for the reopening of tourism.
The post office has undergone a significant renovation, creating a cafe (still closed due to COVID) and a takeaway now providing a place to buy a coffee and stroll across the temporary footbridge.

So if you are looking for a unique visitor attraction, that will never be seen again, take a visit to the Eden Valley and watch Pooley Bridge get their road crossing back. And you can get an amazing view of Ullswater from the temporary footbridge.
