The doors officially opened yesterday on the brand-new Roast Mutton Farm Shop at Killerwick Grange, Dalton-in-Furness, marking a significant expansion for the award-winning Cumbrian brand.
More than 150 guests attended the launch event on Wednesday, 11th June, hosted by Roast Mutton owner and founder Robert Unwin. The ribbon was ceremonially cut by Dalton-in-Furness Deputy Mayor Bruce Solari, who welcomed the new business as a valuable addition to the community.
Guests enjoyed a traditional hog roast and sampled award-winning craft beers from Logan Beck Brewery in Millom, celebrating the ethos of high-quality, local, farm-to-table produce that Roast Mutton is known for.
The Dalton-in-Furness shop is the second Cumbrian location for the brand, following the success of its flagship, multi-award-winning Kendal store. This new site includes state-of-the-art dry-ageing facilities, a cutting room, and a bespoke retail space featuring a butcher’s block, artisan counter, and refrigerated displays.
In addition to Roast Mutton’s signature locally reared and sourced meats, the shop showcases a curated range of products from like-minded local producers, including StoneHouse Smokery, Whin Yeats Dairy, Eden Yard, Lovingly Artisan Bakery, and Wild & Fruitful.
“This is a proud moment for our team,” said Robert Unwin. “Opening our second Cumbrian site has been a long-held ambition. We’re passionate about quality, traceability, and sustainability – values shared by every supplier we work with. We’re excited to bring our farm shop model to the people of Furness and can’t wait for them to experience what we offer.”
Roast Mutton is committed to ethical sourcing, working exclusively with free-range farms and focusing on traditional native breeds and regenerative farming practices. All meat is 100% grass-fed and British, with an emphasis on sustainability and full traceability.
The new site represents a £150,000 investment and has created four full-time jobs. Day-to-day operations are led by Jake Gibson, who joined Roast Mutton in 2021 and now steps into his first role as Managing Butcher.
Deputy Mayor Bruce Solari praised the venture, saying: “It was a real pleasure to be part of the opening. The Roast Mutton Farm Shop is a fantastic addition to Dalton and the wider Furness area. It brings back access to high-quality, locally reared, and sourced food that has been missing for some time. I hope this inspires other food businesses to consider Dalton as a place to thrive.”
Plans are already underway for a series of future events and tastings to further engage the local community. Updates will be shared via Roast Mutton’s social media channels and website.
