At just 21 years old, Joe Moore is already making his mark in the world of cutting-edge technology as a Software Engineer at the Cockermouth-based Createc.
Createc is recognised for its pioneering work across the nuclear, defence, and transportation sectors.
Joe’s journey with Createc began three years ago when he joined as a summer intern. Finding a company on his doorstep that matched his passion for programming and innovation proved to be the perfect fit.
He continued to work with the business throughout his studies at Northumbria University, where he was pursuing a degree in Computer Science. Joe graduated last month and now takes up a full-time position at Createc.
Speaking of his journey with Createc, Joe said: “I was heavily into programming as a hobby, and I couldn’t believe that on my doorstep there was a business that perfectly suited me. At the end of my internship, I continued to work with Createc whenever I could, including summers, holidays and for the duration of my university degree.
“Createc is a truly unique company, especially because of where we are based! The closest thing I can compare to Createc’s offices is Iron Man’s workshop. You will literally see robot dogs, drones and lasers on a daily basis – I love showing people round.”
From his earliest days, Joe has been keen to develop his skills and play a meaningful role in Createc’s projects. He is now a lead software engineer on Situate – the firm’s flagship LiDAR-based system that anonymously monitors crowd movement and is used at sites such as Luton Airport and by Network Rail.
Joe added, “Situate is an exciting Createc product. Situate utilises LiDAR technology to survey public spaces and track the movement of people through those spaces. It takes no photos, and no personal identifiable information. It can be used to monitor safety or benchmark efficiency in large public spaces and is currently installed in airports, train stations, and similar locations.
“My role on Situate is as the main software engineer for the project. I am responsible for
designing and creating new features from client feedback, maintaining the services it provides
and investigate new technologies that could be useful to the Situate stack – it’s certainly one of the projects I’m most proud to be a part of.”
Situate also contributed to Createc winning its fourth King’s Award for Enterprise earlier this year. It is used by Network Rail and at London Luton Airport.
“Joe has repeatedly excelled beyond his years at Createc, bringing boundless enthusiasm and intelligence to his role as a Software Engineer. Since starting, Joe has quickly taken on a pivotal role in our Software Team, leading the development of Situate, our anonymous crowd monitoring technology.
“Joe built up such a great reputation within the team that he was trusted to lead on a project last summer, applying our crowd monitoring technology to detect violence against women and girls on public transport. The project was a great success, and Createc is now working to mature this technology further,” said Rosie Richardson, Strategy Director at Createc, who Joe works with.
