A young businessman is helping to write the next chapter in his family’s 140-year auctioneering story.
Cameron Sharp, 23, has assumed a full-time, hands-on role across Thomson Roddick Callan’s four salerooms, becoming the fifth generation of his family to play a part in the business’ development.
Working alongside his mother, Managing Director Sybelle Thomson, Cameron has taken on responsibilities across all areas of the business. His many tasks include managing staff, clearing homes, loading up vans, valuing items and auctioneering.
He said: “Auctioneering is in my blood, and I’ve been around the salerooms for as long as I can remember. To be working in the business which means so much to me and my family feels like an honour.
“I come from a big family, and I’m very fortunate and grateful to be asked to continue the great work of my predecessors. It feels like I’m doing a service to those who came before me.
“My ambition is to keep Thomson Roddick Callan going for many more generations to come and help the business expand and adapt to changing buyer habits.”
Cameron joined Thomson Roddick Callan, which has salerooms in Dumfries, Edinburgh, Ayr and Carlisle, full-time following his studies at the Royal Agricultural University, in Cirencester.
He is excited to put his own stamp on the business in the coming years as it develops to meet increased demand from a global, online audience.
Cameron said: “One of my favourite aspects of the job is getting out and about, visiting new properties and meeting different customers. We live in a very beautiful country and in recent weeks I have been on call outs to all four corners of Scotland, so I am very grateful for that.
“An objective of mine is to expand Thomson Roddick Callan’s catchment area so we can reach a lot more customers from centralised bases, which would enable us to grow our business outwardly.
“I’m very excited for the future direction of the business and I’m looking forward to working with the excellent team to continue evolving and ensuring that we stay relevant to a growing online audience while retaining our loyal, more traditional customers.”
Cameron’s great-great grandfather John Thomson started the family’s involvement in auctioneering when he purchased his first auction house in Annan, in 1880.
