John Farrer & Co, Kendal, the UK’s oldest coffee roasters is leading from the front by equipping its team of expert roasters with the latest in British made coffee roasting technology, an IKAWA Pro Sample Roaster.
This piece of innovative technology has been specifically designed to make consistent sample roasting easy. Not only that, these versatile machines also improve quality, save time, and encourage collaboration.
The technology came about because of a real need in the industry to adapt and innovate, which all happened fairly recently chiefly because modern coffee drinkers are not content with generic roasts, they actively seek out new blends, new tastes, and new experiences. As a result, In the last five years technology has advanced significantly in response to this.
Thankfully IKAWA is at the heart of this innovation, their kit which is all designed and manufactured in the UK will allow Farrer’s coffee roasters to innovate quickly, work openly and deliver maximum value with minimum fuss.
Prior to acquiring this technology, the sample roasting process was time consuming, requiring skill and patience to achieve consistency and often wasteful if a sample roast wasn’t right. Not forgetting the energy being wasted in creating these larger test roasts.
Happily, Farrer’s roasters now have the ability to create small sample and trial batches of just 50g per roast because they have access to this fully portable, Bluetooth compatible, IKAWA system. It allows the team to roast at their desks, controlling the entire process with a mobile device, completing each roast in as little as 3 minutes.
Farrer’s General Manager, Dave Walsh, said: ‘’Farrer’s may be one of the UK’s oldest roasters, but we have always sought to produce the very best coffee possible by utilising innovative technology. Yes, there are well established ways of roasting and blending coffee, but this doesn’t necessarily mean these have to be the only ways. Already the IKAWA system has allowed us to confidently import small sample batches of single origin coffees, that we previously wouldn’t have access to or couldn’t have sample roasted without buying in significant quantities. This ultimately means that we can broaden our range and gives use easier, quicker access to different coffees, which is hugely exciting for the entire team and for our customers in the longer term.’’
