Engineering specialist helps strengthen critical power at major UK hospital

A CUMBRIA-based electrical engineering specialist has completed a major power upgrade to protect critical clinical services and patient safety at a major UK hospital.

Bender UK, whose headquarters are in Ulverston, delivered the project at Northampton General Hospital as part of a move to improve the reliability and resilience of its power infrastructure.

The upgrade focused on some of the hospital’s most critical environments, including orthopaedic operating theatres, recovery areas, day surgery facilities and the neonatal unit, where uninterrupted power is essential for patient care.

Working closely with Northampton General Hospital’s estates team, the team at Bender designed and delivered a tailored solution to modernise ageing infrastructure while ensuring clinical services could continue with minimal disruption.

Much of the work was carried out during weekends and outside normal operating hours to avoid impacting patients, hospital staff and surgery schedules.

Daryl Coleman, Technical Healthcare Expert at Bender UK, said: “This project was never about applying a standard solution. It was designed around how the hospital’s clinical teams work and the demands of the locations being served.

“In areas such as operating theatres, recovery rooms and the neonatal unit, reliable power infrastructure is absolutely critical for safe patient care.

“Working closely with the hospital trust we developed a solution tailored to its needs while planning installation work to avoid disruption to patient care.

“It’s a privilege to support a hospital of this size in delivering vital services to its community.”

Based in Ulverston, Bender UK specialises in electrical safety, monitoring and power management systems for healthcare, industry and critical infrastructure sectors across the UK.

The project introduced modern power monitoring technology and upgraded backup systems, giving hospital teams greater visibility of their electrical infrastructure and helping identify potential issues before they affect services.

As part of the programme, the company also completed improvements designed to enhance electrical safety in patient care areas and support the long-term reliability of critical equipment.
