Both Westmorland Orchestra and Lakeland Sinfonia have classical music concerts over the last weekend in March as both organisations take over the Westmorland Hall of Kendal Leisure Centre. This means there will be double the opportunities for local music-lovers.
The weekend starts with the Westmorland Orchestra’s spring concert at 7:30pm on Saturday 26 March. Tickets are available via the Orchestra’s website and will also be available on the door on Saturday evening. This will be a great chance to listen to the thrilling music of Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony and a new composition by Fredrik Holm, well known to many young musicians in the area as conductor of the Westmorland Youth Orchestra.
Frederik’s new work is entitled “Equilibrium” and has been composed in memory of the late Jonty Somervell, who played in the Westmorland Orchestra for over 60 years.
The concert opens with a rendition of Berlioz’ Roman Carnival Overture and, for those who particularly enjoy the sound of brass instruments, the programme also includes a rare opportunity to hear an orchestral arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Trombone Concerto, performed by rising star, Ellena Newton.
On Sunday 27 March, Lakeland Sinfonia welcomes Royal Northern Sinfonia to Kendal with conductor, Dinis Sousa and piano soloist, Samson Tsoy. This matinee performance (starting at 4:00pm) incudes Mozart’s Overture to “The Magic Flute”, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2.
Both concerts include special ticket offers for under 19s and full-time students with £5 tickets available for Royal Northern Sinfonia and free entry for Westmorland Orchestra.
“Concert dates and programmes have had to be flexible in recent months because of the impact of Covid,” explains Lakeland Sinfonia Chairman, Charles Fox, “and that is how we have created such a busy but musically exciting March weekend in Kendal. We very much hope that regular concert-goers will use the reduced ticket offers as a reason to invite young people and make the most of these two varied programmes, both featuring rising star soloists.”
