A range of products by Cumbrian botanical fragrance business Cedar & Oak is now on sale at The Barn artisan gift shop and craft space in Hawkshead – its first retail stockist in the Lake District.
“As soon as I smelled Cedar & Oak’s incredible tomato reed diffuser I was transported back to my grandfather’s greenhouse,” said owner Hanne Crank, who opened The Barn in 2024.
Cedar & Oak – whose essential oil fragrances also include gooseberry, rhubarb & spearmint and coconut & Thai lime – is named after trees renowned for longevity and aromatic qualities.
Hand-crafted in small batches, its products are deep, intense and long-lasting.
“Our room diffusers last for 12 months or more and customers say our drawer fresheners seem to last forever,” said Cedar & Oak owner John Watt.
Cedar & Oak – accredited through Made in Cumbria – established its brand at markets, fair and shows over the last three years and launched a retail web site earlier this year.
It is now developing wholesale partnerships with reputable outlets in Cumbria and the Lake District.
“I’m delighted to be the first Lake District stockist for Cedar & Oak as I like to offer my customers high-quality products that are a little different,” said Hanne.
Situated next to the main visitor car park in Hawkshead – billed as the ‘Lake District’s prettiest village’ – The Barn reflects Hanne Crank’s “lust for a good life”.
After leaving a career in banking to “save her sanity”, she moved to the Lake District in 2017 and established herself as a craft workshop teacher.
As well as stocking a wide range of high-quality artisan gifts at The Barn, she also hosts crafting workshops which offer “therapeutic benefits” for participants.
“It’s a wonderful part of the country and I cannot imagine living and working anywhere else now,” added Hanne.
For Carlisle-based Cedar & Oak, The Barn is a “perfect fit for our products”, said Mr Watt.
