Cumbria in Bloom is celebrating 40 years of supporting communities across the county to improve their local environment, with flowers, fruit, veg and bug hotels.
To mark four decades, Cumbria in Bloom is giving a free tree to the first 40 entrants – and forms are available now to take part in Cumbria in Bloom 2025 from the charity’s website.
Cumbria in Bloom organises the annual Cumbria in Bloom awards, part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom event, and aims to get more people involved for their special year.
One of 17 Royal Horticultural Society regions, Cumbria in Bloom was formed in 1985 to encourage people to take part in the annual competition to improve horticulture, floriculture and environmental issues in the region.
As well are encouraging more people to start planting, Cumbria in Bloom is also looking for anyone who entered the first Cumbria in Bloom competition in 1985 – the year of the Live Aid Concert, the launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the first Apple Macintosh computer went on sale.
Chair of Cumbria in Bloom, Keith Mcintosh said: “What started out as part of the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign has grown into an institution that is aiming to improve biodiversity and improve the environment we all live in. Alongside our colourful, blooming flower beds and hanging baskets, we are encouraging people to create spaces for bees, bug and look for ways to conserve water.
“Entries are now open and our categories are; Pride in Your Community, RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood, Tourism and School Garden. We would like to thank “We would like to thank Capsticks Nursery in Carlisle for sponsoring our 40 trees initiative to celebrate our 40thanniversary.”
