Pupils in Years 5 and 6 at Windermere School entertained packed audiences made up of family, friends and pupils with their interpretation of the musical, Cinderella and Rockerfella writes Mark Thomas.
For the pupils, weeks of hard work learning their lines, rehearsing songs and practising complicated dance routines finally came to climax, as the curtains drew back and the cast launched into the first song, ‘Tonight’s the Night’ – a spirit-raising opening number to encourage the audience participation.
Cinderella and Rockerfella is a modern, panto-style reworking of the classic tale with all the traditional characters: downtrodden Cinderella, Rockerfella (formerly known as Prince Charming), Buttons, the Ugly Sisters and the Fairy Godmother. There is also a selection of additional characters, from music managers and paparazzi to good and bad fairies, all placed in the world of fame and celebrity.
With fresh and relevant things to say about fame, fortune and how true love will win in the end, its wonderfully comical script and fabulous songs had the audience laughing, clapping and singing along.
The Year 6 pupils auditioned for the main roles, ably supported by their Year 5 counterparts who played the townspeople, bakers and various animals. While there were some standout performances, it was the energy, enthusiasm and sense of togetherness that many commented on.
Mrs. Nield, who directed the show, was full of praise for the pupils; “The children have worked incredibly hard and it showed in the performances. We’ve had a lot of fun putting this production together – it’s easy to forget that these children are no older than eleven. I’m incredibly proud of them.”
Mrs Thomas, Head of the Elleray Campus at Windermere School, was also quick to praise the children; “The Elleray production of Cinderella and Rockerfella has been an absolute triumph. The production this year has been arguably one of our best in terms of storyline, comic effect and acting. There were some fabulous performances from the lead characters and some excellent singing, backed by a live band. Well done to all involved – what wonderful talent we have here at Elleray.”
Adds Mr Lavender, Headmaster of Windermere School; “Once again, I was struck by the vibrancy, the colour and the individual talent of our Year 5 and 6 students. The potential of this group is evident and their willingness to engage and be part of something bigger than themselves was a joy to see.”
As is tradition, the senior school annual production was announced at the Summer Concert which took place just before the half term break, and the students were absolutely delighted with the choice – Grease. Fresh from their success in Cinderella and Rockerfella, many of the Year 6 students can look forwards to taking part in this show which will be performed in December. Tickets will be available in the Autumn term.
