Across Cumbria, events are being held to raise awareness of Unpaid Carers and Carers’ Week 2022 are getting underway (6-10 June).

The theme this year is “Make Caring Visible, Valued and Supported”.

CEO of West Cumbrian Carers, Angela Longrigg said: “We believe that Unpaid Carers and the challenges of caring should be recognised in all areas of life. Caring should be valued and respected by everyone in our society, and carers should have access to the information and support they need, where and when they need it.

“We are hosting several drop-in events over the week, and invite people to join us for a cuppa and some cake during Carers Week. As well as meeting other carers it will be a great opportunity to take a break from your caring role and have a chat with one of our Support Workers and our wonderful volunteers.”

West Cumbria Carers will be at The Foyer, Irish Street in Whitehaven on Monday 6 June at 10:30 am – 12.30 pm, the United Reform Church, Main Street, Cockermouth on Wednesday 8 June at 10.30 am – 12.30 pm and at Millom Baptist Church, Crown Street on Friday 10 June at 2.00 – 4.00 pm.

Angela added: “There is no need to book as these are drop-in events that are open to anyone, call in at any venue at any time and feel free to bring a friend.”

Those Caring for family or friends are invited to a day event to make Unpaid Carers more visible, valued and supported as part of Furness Carers’ Queen’s Jubilee and Carers’ Week celebrations.

CEO of Furness Carers said: “The free Health and Wellbeing Information Day will be held in the Hindpool Community Centre. Unpaid Carers, their families and anyone else is welcome to come along and see what free support is available from local organisations.

“There will be a café style seating in the hall for free tea, coffee, refreshments and pie and peas. The event aims to showcase what support is available to those caring for loved ones at home.”

Carers Support South Lakes are launching a new support group – The Grange Support Group at the Grange Hotel on Tuesday 7 June at 10.30-12.

Carer Support South Lakes CEO, Debi Marsden said: “We are so pleased to be able to launch a new group, especially during Carers Week.”

Carer Support Eden has two events taking place – their regular Court Thorn Hub at the Surgery on Monday, 6 June from 1-3 pm for a cuppa and a chat, and a day out for Carers Week to Barton Grange Garden Centre on Thursday, 9 June (booking required via the Carer Support Eden office).

CEO of Eden Carers, Dani Leslie said: “This Carers Week, Carers UK is calling for the UK Government to publish a Recovery and Respite Plan for Unpaid Carers. We are encouraging people to support the campaign by writing to their local MP about the campaign and sharing the information with Carers. We have information now on our website about the campaign.

“After the past two and a half years many people have provided Unpaid Care to family and friends, to look after and keep them safe. However, this level of care comes at a cost to their own health and wellbeing. Ahead of this winter, we want to ensure Carers get the support they need as soon as possible. Respite and carer services and support is what is needed for Unpaid Carers and Carers Week is a way of highlighting the role and needs of Unpaid Carers.”
