Askham Hall Christmas Market 2019: Michelin star chef swaps fine dining for flipping burgers on the BBQ

Askham Hall in winter

FOR one day only, one of Cumbria’s newest Michelin star chefs will be flipping burgers on the BBQ as he gets into the festive spirit at Askham Hall’s Christmas Market.

With previous Christmas events at the historic site attracting around 1,200 people, it will be all hands on deck this Sunday 8 December, as the former home of the Earls of Lonsdale comes alive with the sights and sounds of the yuletide season.

Askham Hall’s Head Chef Richard Swale

Askham Hall’s Head Chef Richard Swale will be taking charge of the BBQ, as visitors enjoy an expanded variety of food and drink for the occasion.

Overall, more than 50 stalls will be taking residence in the 12-acre gardens, with Askham’s Medieval Hall, ‘Party Barn’ and rustic courtyard all decked out in festive finery.  Live music will feature Christmas carols with Penrith Town Band.

There will also be a special prize draw, in conjunction with Booths Penrith. Everyone attending the event will receive a strip of raffle tickles, giving them the chance to open a door on a giant-size advent calendar and win an array of festive treats.

Meanwhile, there will be a children’s Christmas jumper competition. Traditional winter warmers including mulled wine and mince pies will be available throughout the day at Askham Hall Café, and Father Christmas will also be on hand to meet the children in his special Christmas Grotto.

Askham Hall Christmas Market will run 11am until 4pm, next Sunday 8 December 2019. The winners of the raffle and children’s best Christmas jumper competition will be drawn at 2.30pm in the Barn.  For anyone who misses it, the results will be streamed via Facebook Live with the winning numbers also announced on social media afterwards.

It is £4 entry for adults (under 16s are free) including raffle tickets, with proceeds going to Hospice at Home and the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group. Well-behaved dogs also welcome.
