Passengers taking the scenic Settle Carlisle railway can enjoy a cup of quality, ethical and sustainable coffee, thanks to local artisan coffee roaster Kane Pulford-Roberts of The Clubhouse Coffee Roasters
Voted the best scenic railway in Europe by travel publishers Lonely Planet, the Settle Carlisle railway is one of the few services in the country to provide a regular refreshment trolley.
Provided by the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, the trolley service aims to highlight the best of local produce available along their line, and coffee from The Clubhouse Coffee Roasters based in Skipton is now available on all their services.
Kane developed his passion for coffee roasting during lockdown, and has since travelled to South America to meet the farmer producing the coffee beans. Some of the beans from the harvest being used now were hand picked by Kane on his visit to Peru. Now he has created a special blend of coffee for sale on the iconic Settle Carlisle railway.
Kane said: “Having my coffee available on the Settle Carlisle refreshment trolley is amazing. I am passionate about good, sustainable and ethical coffee and to share this with the many visitors and local people who travel on the line is wonderful.”
Kane roasts all his coffee at his premises in Skipton, where he also runs the The Clubhouse Coffee and Cycles shop.
He added: “By roasting our own coffee beans we have the control to choose the flavours and quality of our coffee and ensure it is sourced ethically”
Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company’s Operational Manager, Susie Payne said: “We are always looking for new suppliers along our line, and when I tasted Kane’s coffee and heard the story of how he sources his beans ethically and sustainably he was the ideal business to work with.
“We want to provide the millions of passenger we service each year with the very best refreshments, and support our communities along the line. Using Kane’s special blend of coffee is a great example of how we can work together to support local businesses and provide an excellent service to our passengers.”
The Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company’s refreshment trolley service is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. And as part of their celebrations a new Settle Carlisle ale has been produced by local artisan brewers Eden Brewery based in Penrith.
Members of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company have taken part in a photoshoot for a WI style calendar for 2025 with 10 per cent of the profits going to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The team are hosting a series of fundraisers for their chosen charity throughout the year, and have already climbed one of the Three Peaks, Whernside.
