THEATRE-BY-THE-LAKE and Pentabus have announced the full cast and rural tour dates for their new spring co-production, and the world premiere of One Side Lies the Sea setting sail on a five-week tour across seven English counties.
There will be two preview and opening nights in Shropshire and Cumbria before the production tours both counties as well as Herefordshire, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Cornwall and Devon from 20 March to 30 May 2020.
The creative team have been on a journey around rural coastal Britain and met some astonishing people along the way – One Side Lies the Sea shares their stories. Tales of hope, laughter and loss, of seas and tides, of quotas and freedom. From Newlyn to Maryport, Silloth to Hornsea, One Side Lies the Sea is a musical journey through the brilliant communities that inhabit our coastline.
Director, Sophie Motley, said: “We’ve met so many wonderful people who live beside the sea over the past two years, and we can’t wait to share their stories with you. We all listen to the shipping forecast when we can’t sleep, but some people live it.”
The play includes stories from Cumbria’s Haaf net fishermen, whose technique of fishing goes back to the Vikings. Mark, one of the West Cumbrian fishermen told the team: “Standing out in the middle of the Solway it’s a different world, it’s a different place to be. It takes away all your life stresses. Thinking about the tides will take you away for days. It’s like pressing the restart button.”
The cast for the new play will be Jennifer Bell and Harry Humberstone and it will have its preview at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick on Friday 20 March, 7.30pm and will run until Saturday 18 April before a three-venue tour Cumbria visiting:
