Could you capture the architectural heart and soul of the Great Border City in a photograph?
That’s the challenge being set by an exciting new photography competition launching in Carlisle today.
Called Beautiful Bricks, the competition focuses on Carlisle’s varied and characterful built environment.
Cash prizes are up for grabs and shortlisted images will go on display in an exhibition in the city’s historic quarter.
The competition is the brainchild of the conveyancing team at city law firm Wragg Mark Bell, who deal with the buying and selling of local properties and have in-depth knowledge of the city.
Laura Urquhart , Director and Head of Conveyancing at Wragg Mark Bell said: “As city centre property experts we have a real appreciation for Carlisle.
“It is such a beautiful place with buildings reflecting its 900-year-plus history as a city. We wanted to launch a competition to celebrate and showcase this architectural mosaic.
“You might be a seasoned professional with expensive camera gear or just an amateur who loves Carlisle and taking interesting shots on your phone – everyone is welcome to enter. We want to capture the spirit of Carlisle today through its buildings.”
The first prize winner will receive £150, second prize, which is sponsored by Blackbox Architects, is £100 and third prize is £75.
The deadline for entries is June 14 and a shortlisted selection of the photographs will be displayed at Intro pop-up gallery on Paternoster Row for the public to view between June 19 – 22.
The judges are Laura Urquhart, director at Wragg Mark-Bell, award-winning local artist and photographer David Hollins, and Malcolm Wilson, Director of Blackbox Architects.
Malcolm, who is nationally recognised for his art including dramatic landscape paintings of Carlisle city, was also a keen landscape and sports photographer and has acted as a judge of photography competitions including for the BBC.
He said: “Carlisle is full of character, is set within beautiful countryside and has deep historical significance. But how often do we stop and appreciate our hometown?
“We also know there is a strong tradition of creativity here. I’m really looking forward to seeing the entries and what they capture of this Great Border City today.”
Beautiful Bricks is open to amateur and professional photographers.
Entrants can turn their lenses on buildings old or new, utilitarian, quirky or grand. You might portray a whole building, or an interesting detail, or take a wide shot of a cityscape.
Each entrant can submit 1 to 3 photographs.
Your framed photograph/s should be submitted in person, marked FAO Sally Edgar, at Intro PR on Paternoster Row by Friday 14 June 2024 at 4pm. Address is 7 Paternoster Row, Carlisle, CA3 8TT, opposite Carlisle Cathedral. Contact details should be included on the back of your photograph.
