As the Local Government Reorganisation replaces Cumbria County Council and the six district councils with two new councils for Cumbria on April 1 this year, unpaid Carers will continue to receive support from their local charity organisations.
Carer Support Cumbria has successfully bid to continue providing services for the new Westmorland & Furness and Cumberland authorities.
Carer Support West Cumbria, Carer Support South Lakes, Furness Carers and Carer Support Eden have been providing services on behalf of Cumbria County Council.
Carer Support Eden will be officially changing their name to Carer Support Carlisle & Eden after successfully bidding to extend their reach, to provide services to unpaid Carers in Carlisle.
CEO of Carer Support Carlisle and Eden, Dani Leslie said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to deliver services for unpaid Carers across the two new councils and for Carer Support Eden to have been awarded the contract to support those in the Carlisle area.
“Established in 2014, Carer Support Cumbria is the carer organisation that supports unpaid Carers, including Young Carers across the county. We are looking forward to continuing to provide the same services including Assessment, Support Plans, Health and Wellbeing Support, social activities and personal support services through Cumberland and Westmorland & Furness councils from April 1.”
Working together under the Carer Support Cumbria consortium umbrella, the charities will continue to work across their existing geographical areas with the new Westmorland & Furness Council responsible for what is currently Barrow-in-Furness, Eden and South Lakeland and Cumberland for Allerdale, Carlisle and Copeland.
CEO of Carer Support South Lakes, Debi Marsden added: “Carer Support Cumbria is a carer services provider consortium, an association formed from the county’s well-established Carer support service providers. All of our organisations have extensive experience in delivering targeted support services for unpaid Carers of all ages – from five years upwards on behalf of Cumbria County Council. To have secured the contract with both of the new councils will ensure the services continue without change for unpaid Carers across the county.”
CEO of Furness Carers, Craig Backhouse said: “All of our organisations were instrumental in partnering with Cumbria County Council, the NHS, GPs, Health and Social Care agencies and the third sector providers in initiating countywide care support services. Working together will ensure we continue to provide the best service for unpaid Carers with the two new councils serving what is currently Cumbria.”

We all have experienced and expert staff teams, skilled in ensuring equal access to urban and rural communities, to minority and seldom heard communities and in ensuring personalised support.
“We all have a wealth of experience in the management and delivery of Carer support services under contract to Cumbria County Council, and look forward to continuing to provide our high levels of service under Cumberland and Westmorland & Furness councils.”
