Everything you wanted to know about the Romans answered at Birdoswald Roman Fort

Everything you wanted to know about the Romans answered in Cumbria

The Great Border City, Carlisle was one of the last outposts of the Roman Empire, and the county retains the wall built by Hadrian to keep out the Scots. Today Hadrian’s wall is a major tourist attraction, and Birdoswald Roman Fort is a great place for the whole family to discover more about this key period of history.

The great thing about Birdoswald Roman Fort is the interactive displays which capture the imagination of young and old – find out what type of Roman you would have been, work out how the wall was built then step outside to see the remains of the real fort itself.

The displays, both inside and out take you through the timeline, and display clearly the remains of the original roman fort.

The café onside has amazing views over the border to Scotland as well as into the Pennines. Even today, this is a bleak, remote spot where you can let your imagination wander and feel what it must have been like for those Roman soldiers leaving the Mediterranean weather behind for the windswept wilderness of the border country.

And this week:
