How have we managed to get to the halfway point of 2019? I can’t believe it’s July already and we’ve got so much planned for this summer month we’d like to share with you.
1 . Take part in the Race for Life in Carlisle
It has become an annual event which I am pleased to say I take part in each year, to raise awareness and also funds for Cancer Research.

2. Celebrate Westmorland Dales Day 28 July
Celebrating our rich landscape and the people who live in the newly formed extended Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Westmorland Dales.
It can sound a little confusing, having part of Cumbria come under the Yorkshire Dales, however, it is keeping the old county name of Westmorland alive, and this special annual event focuses on the great walking, cycling and running you can enjoy in this part of Cumbria, as well as an action-packed events programme of arts and crafts fairs, food market, steam railway rides and children’s activities based in and around Kirkby Stephen.

3. Discover more about the Arms Houses of Lady Anne Clifford
St Anne’s Hospital, also known as Lady Anne’s Almshouses in Boroughgate, Appleby, will be holding its annual Garden Fete on Sunday 14 July. From 2 o’clock in the garden behind the courtyard, there will be all the fun of the fete. With music provided by the Town Band, there will be cream teas, cake and bric-a-brac stalls, tombola, raffles and games, plus a visit by the Appleby Town Mayor. For the last few years the Garden Fete has been one of the events of Appleby Carnival Weekend and it will finish with the Grand Carnival Draw, followed by the draw for St Anne’s own raffle and, this year, the drawing of the lucky winner of the picture produced specially for the St Anne’s Summerhouse Fund by local artist Mark Hillsden of Castle Gallery.
4. LEGO exhibition opens at Rheged – 12 July-1 September
We are so looking forward to the preview night – so we will be able to tell you a lot more about it after our visit, however, the initial information looks like there is something for every Lego fan.

5. Potfest in the Park July 26th – 28th 2019
This has become quite a tradition for our family to go along to see some really interesting and inspiring pottery, all in the grounds of Hutton-in-the-Forest near Penrith.
The rang and styles of pottery for sale at the event is amazing, and to be able to talk to the person who created the piece you are buying makes it that little bit extra special.
If you are planning on buying something for your garden or home, do remember that the telephone signal isn’t always the best in this rural area, and sometimes you cannot buy with a credit card, so its a good idea to bring along good old fashioned cash.
5. Join ‘The Great Cumbrian Litter Pick’ 2019
Ok, picking up other people’s rubbish doesn’t sound like a great day out, however, the satisfaction of being part of a team of people, working together to make their environment a better place for everyone is a satisfying thing to do. And there are some extreme and fun ways to get involved.
A “Board It Bin It” litter pick by stand up paddle board on Windermere is just one of almost 40 litter picks across Cumbria already registered to take part in The Great Cumbrian Litter Pick on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 July.
The event is being coordinated by landscape charity Friends of the Lake District in a bid to tackle the blight of carelessly chucked rubbish on our spectacular countryside. The charity is asking every parish, school and organisation in Cumbria to get involved to make this a really high profile and well-supported day to show the rest of the UK how proud we are of our county.
Friends of the Lake District Landscape Engagement Officer, Ruth Kirk says: We’ve held an underwater debris dive and multiple litter picks by canoe in the past to help clean up Cumbria so we are delighted to be joined by ‘LakeSUP’ with their innovative mode of transport!
“For people who are happier on dry land, there’s still plenty of time to sign up to help tidy up, either by organising your own group or individual litter pick or by joining one of the public events you’ll find on our interactive Great Cumbrian Litter Pick map.
There are opportunities to combine a full day of walking and fresh air with a litter pick by joining the group heading up England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike or more leisurely options like a stroll around Kendal Castle. Whatever you fancy, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to do your bit.”
There will be a draw with a prize of £500 each for one community and one school who takes part, to be spent on environmental improvement or enhancement in your local area or school.
