A group of 30 older people from Barrow recently enjoyed a nostalgic and educational day exploring the history of transport.
Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire, in partnership with Age UK South Cumbria, ran another of their Grand Days Out to the Lakeland Motor Museum at the end of November, offering passengers an excursion filled with discovery, nostalgia and fun followed by a lunch in Cafe Ambio, courtesy of Stagecoach.
The Stagecoach Grand Day Out initiative aims to bring communities together through shared experiences while promoting sustainable travel and also helping to combat social isolation and loneliness.
The Lakeland Motor Museum showcases over a century of transport history, featuring classic buses, trams, vintage cars, and interactive exhibits that bring the story of travel to life.
Age UK South Cumbria volunteer Barbara Wild, who attended the day trip, said: “Stagecoach have been absolutely wonderful today. They put on a special bus for us to bring us down to the museum today on our Grand Day Out, which has been brilliant.”
Hector Selth said: “It’s been a very interesting trip today looking around the museum and seeing some of the old cars and motorbikes that some of us used to have.”
Steve Tweddell, Social Engagement Officer at Age Uk South Cumbria, said: “What a wonderful Grand Day Out we had in partnership with Stagecoach taking some of our older adults out for the day. We visited Lakeland Motor Museum, which brought back lots of memories of owning or journeys in various vehicles and motorbikes. After all the stories were told, we went into Ambio café for a lovely lunch and more chatter.
“Days out and partnerships like these are great for our older clients to help them meet up and mix with others, especially if they live on their own.”
Tom Waterhouse, Managing Director of Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire, said: “One of the pleasures of our job is helping people get out and explore our wonderful county, while socialising and having fun at the same time.
“Initiatives like the Grand Day Out encourage older people to make the most of their concessionary bus passes to enjoy the area and support local businesses and tourist attractions across Cumbria.”
