Cumbrian unpaid Carers have taken part in the annual State of Caring Survey 2023, organised by Carers UK.

The survey is the most comprehensive research into the lives and experiences of carers. Last year a record 13,000 carers took part in the survey – the highest number of responses Carer UK ever had.

CEO of Carer Support Carlisle and Eden, Dr Dani Leslie said: “The State of Caring survey helps provide an understanding of unpaid Carers’ needs and the challenges they face.

“With a General Election in Westminster on the horizon, knowing the issues carers face in 2023 couldn’t come at a more important time.”

Unpaid Carers’ responses were influential in Carer UK winning landmark new rights for two million employees to take up to five days’ unpaid Carer’s Leave.

Last year’s survey data provided evidence for a campaign to have unpaid Carers included in cost-of-living payments, with vital evidence of carers’ financial struggles

The results also showed the impact of the backlog in the NHS and make sure carers are not forgotten in NHS and care reforms

The data is used to seek improvements to unpaid Carers’ benefits through Carer UK’s newly established Carer Poverty Coalition and respond to government consultations on a range of issues affecting carers.

The results from the 2023 survey will be published later this year.
