Penrith town centre is to receive a road re-vamp from Monday March 5 as Cumbria County Council will work to repair and replace the stone sett road surface.
The repairs in the Market Square area involve a mortar bedding under the setts being replaced by a higher strength specification. Two similar exercises in recent years have successfully prevented surface failures and degradation.
The current works are set to be completed in three phases, although due to the nature of the work, and to maintain a safe highway, some road closures will be in place.
The weather dependant work will take around three weeks in total to complete.
Road closures and diversion routes will be in place as follows:
Phase 1 – from March 5 for up to two nights
A6 Middlegate from its junction with Corney Square up to its junction with Queen Street.
Diversion Via: Corney Square, Duke Street, Stricklandgate, Portland Place, Meeting House Lane, Sandgate and Burrowgate
Phase 2 – from March 10 for up to two nights
A6 Devonshire Street from its junction with the U3522 Burrowgate up to its junction with the A592 Market Square.
Diversion Via: Burrowgate, Sandgate, Benson Row, Friargate, Old London Road, Roper Street, Victoria Road and King Street
Phase 3 – from March 12 for two weeks (24 hours per day)
A592 Market Square from its junction the A6 Devonshire Street up to its junction with Market Square (the right turn from Devonshire Street towards Corn Market).
Diversion Via: King Street, Victoria Road, Southend Road, Kilgour Street, Castle Hill Road, West Lane and Great Dockray
A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.
