Sir Chris is latest ambassador for scouting in Cumbria

Sir Chris Bonington is to become an ambassador for scouting in Cumbria.

The world-renowned climber, who lives at Caldbeck, was a scout as a youngster and will use his experiences, which have included conquering Everest and becoming the first Briton to climb the north wall of the Eiger, to support the 4,000 scouts in Cumbria.

Sir Chris said: “I am delighted and honoured to be asked by them to be an ambassador. As a young, then, Wolf Cub, I was introduced to the adventure, fun and challenge of scouting.

“I am aware that scouting in Cumbria is growing, like the rest of the UK, yet this is being curtailed by a lack of adult support.

“The scout movement has a huge amount to offer young people in our county. I hope than I can help in raising their profile to encourage more adults to join the fun, so that the young people who are missing out get to enjoy the same adventures as I did.”

Cumbria’s other scouting ambassadors are construction boss Fred Story and the Carlisle MP, John Stevenson.

Carlisle Explorer Scout leader Eddie Ward who is behind the county ambassador drive.said: “We are seeking to gain the support of high profile Cumbrians from various walks of life to advocate on behalf of scouting.

“Our ambassadors have been a great success. They continue to provide great support and help to raise our profile.”
