#CumbrianTable: Festive afternoon tea in the Borrowdale Valley’s Leathes Head Hotel

Leathes Head Hotel, Borrowdale, Lake District, Cumbria – Festive afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is more than a meal, it is an experience to be treasured – especially when you have the views of the Borrowdale Valley to enjoy at the Leathes Head Hotel says Karen Morley-Chesworth.

Stunning view from the restaurant at Leathes Head Hotel in the Borrowdale Valley, English Lake District, Cumbria.

Traditional Lakeland hotel

The welcome received as you walk through the large front door of this beautiful, tradition Lakeland hotel is warm and friendly. This is a venue that puts their guests at ease, and provides a peaceful, tranquil oasis.

Sitting in the bay window of the warm, luxurious Leathes Head Hotel and Restaurant on a cold, crisp and sunny winter’s afternoon, you could not wish for more.

Festive themed afternoon tea

Yet that is exactly what we were given. Their festive themed afternoon tea brings the best of Christmas tastes together on two three-tiered Lake District slate cake stands. Our choice of Redbush and English Breakfast pots of tea were kept topped up by our attentive host. We happily spent over two hours enjoying the spectacular views and enjoying the freshly prepared food.

Flavours of Christmas

The savoury choices of smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches on brown and white bread, alongside the festive turkey and cranberry sauce selection were the flavours of Christmas tea. The delicate pastry of the homemade mince pies and stöllen with deliciously sweet and almond marzipan centre recreated pure Christmas taste memories. The rich flavours of the dark chocolate bites were the velvety luxury to be enjoyed at this time of year – naughty but very, very nice.

Festive cinnamon whipped cream

The chocolate rolls with creamy centres provided another bite of bitter sweet delight, and it was a struggle to find room for the freshly baked, light, fruit filled delights of the warm scones with jam and whipped cream with festive cinnamon added.

As we watched the sky gently turn from bright blue to warm pinks above the fells we worked our way through the festive feast. This was a treat to take time over and savour.

Watching the birds and red squirrels

From our vantage point in the conservatory of this stunning hotel, we watched the birds coming down to feed on the veranda outside the window – and with red squirrels living in the trees lining the entrance to this impressive hotel, we searched for the red fluffy tales in the branches above.

Afternoon tea – the perfect gift

A festive afternoon tea in this tranquil valley of the Lake District is the perfect early Christmas gift or treat for yourself to escape the busyness of this time of year. It is a welcome place of peace to enjoy the very best of the season – in the calm and natural beauty of the lakes.

As we walked back to the car park we passed the outdoor tea house, situated in a sheltered garden. With soft cushions inside the Cumbrian slate built folly it looked a romantic place to enjoy a summer tea.  Leathes Head Hotel is clearly the all-year-round masters of the traditional English afternoon tea experience.
